Yes. That is true. There is a wonderful children's book called "Galimoto" about a child in the African country of Malawi. I love to read this book to kids because little Kondi has to make his own toys. And the boys of Malawi make galimotos- wonderful moving contraptions made out of scrounged wire. They don't get a toy in a plastic wrapper from the store- they have to trade, and hunt for the parts, and then make it themselves. This is a dramatic illustration of the kind of intelligence I mean- and no, it isn't just hunter gatherers. I agree- I just wanted an extreme and dramatic example. Most people have some sort of skill and some kind of knowledge, but not all skills and forms of knowledge are equally valued, are they? In our highly technological environment formal technical education is very adaptive and a premium is placed upon it- but environments change- that is the lesson of the past. And I can certainly see how many other forms of knowledge could be very useful indeed, if some part of our modern environment were to change dramatically.
