Alex, here's an explanation of the zig-zags stockcharts.com

I don't use them. I sold RIG last week.

RE: RIG -- Four of the last five short term tops have been marked by a daily close very near the top of the daily range, ie, close to the highest price of the day. Friday's retreat from the day's highs says to me that RIG has a little way to go on the upside.ST.

Timelord, thanks for the reply on RIG.

Regarding your NE and SII short picks - to throw in a little FA to mix with your TA I'd say NE is at a fairly silly overvaluation compared to their peers, but SII is not. For that reason I'd lean toward NE given those two choices.

Quehubo, also thanks to your reply on RIG. I've heard the 900 pound gorilla argument any number of times, but I just don't buy it. Look at GM, they were just surpassed by XOM and Wallmart in terms of market cap. Shows you need more than sheer bulk to prevail over time - you need a good business plan. Also look at SLB over the last few years of boom & bust - granted much more stable but you don't get the multi-bagger type performance I look for with stocks like that.

I'm not saying that RIG doesn't have a good plan, just that their valuation is pretty steep compared to other drillers. They have already come out and said Q1 results are going to be lousy, and they are continuing to wrestle (unsuccessfully to date) with the Sedco Express newbuild disasters. Throw in a case of FLC buyout debt & sub-par asset indigestion and I think their multiples will suffer some contraction, at least short term. By the time those issues are sorted out we may well be into the next cyclical downturn so I wonder if there are better values elsewhere - say perhaps cash?
