(9437) and other advanced features, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun has learned. The planned move coincides with the start of third-generation cell phone services in Japan and Europe later this year, which will enable users to make calls anywhere in the world and offer substantially higher throughput than is available now.Sharp Corp. (6753) says it plans to begin selling this summer in the U.S. advanced cdmaOne handsets fitted with a digital camera or a color LCD panel. The company will double output at its Hiroshima Prefecture plant to 7.2 million units a year and is considering building a new plant in another Asian country. Sharp expects to double cell phone output to 9 million in fiscal 2001, with the bulk of the production increase destined for export. Versatile 3G phones have the potential of becoming the most widely used information appliance, so companies aiming to succeed in this field must make their move now or never, according to President Katsuhiko Machida. Sanyo Electric Co. (6764) intends to boost cell phone exports to 5.5 million terminals in fiscal 2001, up from an estimated 1.6 million in the current fiscal year, by outsourcing more production, company officials said. Toshiba Corp. (6502) plans to develop new cell phones in fiscal 2001 and have Siemens AG produce them for sale in Europe, according to company sources. Domestic industry leader Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. (6781) will set up a temporary production facility before its new plant in the Czech Republic comes on stream in October, in order to move up its European production schedule. Overseas sales are projected to increase more than 30% to 20 million phones in fiscal 2001. "We hope to double our global market share to 10% in 2003 and join the ranks of the world's top three," says President Takashi Kawada. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) is also boosting overseas output capacity, raising its sales target abroad to 25 million terminals in fiscal 2001, from 20 million this year. Global cell phone sales, estimated at 380 million units for 2000, are expected to more than double to 780 million by 2003. Japanese manufacturers, which have lagged behind in overseas markets, aim to grab the lead with 3G phones. (The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Monday morning edition)
