High-Stakes Politics: The Race to Rule the Nation nytimes.com "What he's trying to do now is change the brand name a little bit for people who basically agree with us but will not look at our brand name," said Representative Thomas M. Davis 3rd, the Virginia Republican in charge of the House Republicans campaign effort. Gone are the days when Republicans celebrated the business class and "trickle down" economics. Instead, the president's rhetoric is calculated to appeal to Democratic target voters like blue-collar households, Catholics and parents dissatisfied with public education. "The president now has the opportunity to create a new governing majority based on a new time, a new approach, a new agenda and a new philosophy of compassionate conservatism," says Karl Rove, one of Mr. Bush's closest aides. When the president promotes domestic energy exploration, he says it is a way to help people with their heating bills. He touts his education plan as aiding lower-income families with children stuck in failing public schools. And when he stumps for his $1.6 trillion, 10-year tax cut, he trots out a single mother of modest means. "For every additional dollar she makes above $25,000, she pays a higher marginal rate on that dollar than someone who's wealthy," he says. "And that's not right and that's not fair." It was left to Jon Corzine, the wealthy Democratic senator of New Jersey, to point out that he would get an estimated $1 million a year tax reduction under Bush's plan. I found this whole article sort of mystifying. Republican Brand? Jeez, as if the handlers don't have enough control of things already. This bit about the marginal tax rates has to be the crock of crocks, though. The peak marginal tax rate cuts off at the income level that Social Security taxes cut off. This is at an income level considerably lower than W's core constituency. I don't imagine any of W's handlers will be pointing out that that would not change under W's plan. -Win
