Mildly interesting statement by Abbey Joseph Cohen about 3G auctions in Europe vs. US. I wonder
if she knows the whole story? Same old line: "It is a technology
where Europe is more advanced than the
United States. " Q IR has got to do something about this.

But Ms Cohen still sees cause for concern for
telecommunications shares, which have taken
a battering this week after Orange's
disappointing flotation on Monday.

There has been concern
about the huge
amounts paid by
European mobile phone
operators for licences
to run third-generation
networks.

It is a technology
where Europe is more advanced than the
United States.

"I'm happy that that the US is behind Europe in
the award of mobile licences," says Ms Cohen.

"This was one area where it was good not to
be on the leading edge of technology."

But overall the Goldman Sachs strategist thinks
this year could be a bright one for investors.

"1999 was unsustainably strong. 2000 saw the
correction. In 2001 we'll get a normal trend
rate of growth."
