<font color=red>Tokyo markets--28-month low Monday

01:53 GMT-05:00 Monday, February 19, 2001

Tokyo — Shares in Tokyo closed at a 28-month low Monday, hurt by losses in optical fibre plays after the U.S. Nasdaq's 5 per cent drop stoked fears over a speedy cooling in global demand for tech goods.

The tech-heavy U.S. Nasdaq was hard hit Friday by a profit revision from Canada's Nortel Networks on the previous day after the market closed.

"The news of Nortel's chilly short-term future certainly shocked fibre-optic investors here on Friday and into today," said Hiroshi Arano, director of the investment trust management department at Dai-Ichi Kangyo Asset Management. "Given Japan's shaky political and financial situation, the market will continue to produce such knee-jerk reactions to stock movements in the U.S."
