I corrected it a little later. I believe it was the F-14 and F-15. The F-18 was a development of the Northrup F-5. I think the F-16 was a stand alone Air Force plane from the gitgo. But I'm old, my memory is not what it was, and I'm not an authority anyway. Perhaps someone could provide a URL to document the real facts? edit: I read your next post and you likely are correct. The F-20 was a development of the F-5. Sorry for any confusion. I'll surf and see if I can find authoritative info.
