Lucent Technologies Awarded Broadband Access Network Expansion Project by Guangzhou Telecom
Project Marks Lucent's First Stinger DSL Platform Deployment in China
BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2001-- Lucent Technologies today announced that it has been awarded a broadband access network expansion project by Guangzhou Telecom. Under the multi-million US dollars contract, Lucent will supply Guangzhou Telecom with its industry- leading Stinger(TM) digital subscriber line (DSL) access concentrators for Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong Province in Southern China. The contract represents Lucent's first sale of Stinger products in China.

The Stinger systems will be deployed in 60 locations, enabling Guangzhou Telecom to provide high-speed Internet access and other broadband services, such as video on demand, distance learning, and distance medical care, via asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology. Guangzhou Telecom is deploying Lucent's ultra high-density Stinger FS and smaller-capacity Stinger LS DSL access concentrators. The ADSL broadband access network will be managed by Lucent's Navis(TM) network management system.

``We are pleased that Guangzhou Telecom has selected Lucent's DSL products for the expansion project because it represents a business milestone for Lucent's Stinger products in China,'' said Gary Li, regional sales director, InterNetworking Systems Group, Lucent Technologies China. ``Stinger provides Guangzhou Telecom with a fast and cost effective way to meet the customers' demands for high-quality broadband services,'' added Li.

Lucent's next generation DSL access concentrator delivers the best performance for key network applications by offering a wide variety of quality of service (QoS) options. Stinger uses high-capacity ATM switching fabric to deliver flexible data flow. Its modular design enables easy extension and upgrade, and offers complete system redundancy with no single point of failure. Stinger's built-in software features, processing power and storage capacity can be easily upgraded, providing a highly scaleable and extensible DSL access concentrator.

With support for up to 2,016 ports in a single rack, the Stinger FS is the industry's densest DSLAM (DSL access multiplexor). The new Stinger LS -- a smaller capacity version of Lucent's original Stinger FS -- extends the Stinger family to cover the multi-dwelling unit (MDU) market, as well as smaller central offices. The Stinger family provides support for all common versions of DSL standards, including SHDSL (single-line high bit rate DSL), SDSL (symmetric DSL), IDSL (ISDN DSL), and all types of ADSL. More than 14,000 Stinger systems have been shipped worldwide.
