but do really hunt deer with a 44 magnum handgund

Yes I really do. Is it unusual, yes. Why do I do it? It is kind of like bow hunting, it is more of a challenge and the animal has a much greater chance. I target shoot a lot and play with guns. If I have a stable rest or tripod a deer at 3-400 yards that is standing is done. With my pistol I am only good to about 60 yards. Forces me to watch a lot of deer walk by and forces me to scout more and become a better hunter. I do a lot of hunting with a black powder gun for the same reason.

I guess that I do it for the challenge.

Hunting with a handgun is allowed by law in many states. A .44 magnum is sufficient for deer. Some hunters use a .357 magnum. In Alaska where I live the .454 Casull is popular since it is more powerful than a .44 magnum. A local story has it that you should file off the front sight...

... so it does not hurt so much when that grizzly you were bothering shoves it up your backside.
