Joe re <<does the "total temp rise is 6 degrees" mean that the difference in temperature of 217 mm^2 die and the heat spreader (Tcase) can by up to 6 degrees?>>

6 degree was based on the assumption that power density is 50 W/cm^2 which is the case for Athlon. P4 has power density of only 25 W/cm^2 (no?), so temperature rise is only 3 degrees. When calculating these temp rises one must always know that power density is relevant, and not the absolute power.

Re <<does it imply maximum die temperature of up to 78 deg C? (I don't know how localized hot spots on the die enter into this picture).>>

Yes 75 (72+1+3) in case of the P4. As far as localized temp is concerned, I don't really know. But power should be extremely localized to have any effect since silicon is a great conductor.
