... remembering Dale Earnhardt ...

... it is a subdued and quiet early morning for me ...

... I have been a race car fan most of my life ... a Formula One fan through and through ... I was at the track when Jim Clark won at Watkins Glen in 1967, when Ronnie Peterson won there in 1973 and James Hunt in 1976 ... and again, last year, when Michael Schumacher won at Indy ...

... I always hated stock car racing and I laughed at it and mocked it until 1987 when I took a one year consulting assignment with Raytheon in Bristol, Tennessee ... I went to the NASCAR track there to get my first look at the 'high banks of Bristol' and became an instant fan ... of Dale Earnhardt ... I flew my wife and daughter down from Boston for the '87 night race ... and my wife Jan became a Dale Earnhardt fan ...

... Dale was just then starting an incredible run of success that would quickly bring him five new Winston Cup season championships to add to the two he already had ... he drove a blue and yellow Wrangler sponsored Chevy ... it was the year before Dale became the 'man in black' ... He was exciting to watch - he kicked ass and took no prisoners ... he was tough and he was talented ... and fans either loved him or hated him ...

... I loved him ... he never quit ... he was aggressive ... he was crude ... he was stock car racing in the late 80s and early 90s ... Dale was fun ... he'd punch you in the nose or shove your car into the wall ... he was not known as 'The Intimidator' without cause ... he was Scott McNealy times ten ... in your face ... all the time.

... I have attended a total of four NASCAR races ... all of them were in Bristol ... for two of those races, I flew to Bristol from Boston just for the famed night race in 'Thunder Valley' ... Dale Earnhardt won the first three of those four races ... one of them from 2 laps down ...

... Dale Earnhardt was the man ... my man ... I miss him already ...
