Froland,

Had the MM's been looking forward, they might have developed a high bandwidth memory technology years ago.

It was pretty clear from the i820 benchmarks that high bandwidth memory was of no value to a CPU, until P4 came out. And even for P4 most benchmarks look rather poor, indicating that only a small subset of the software base can take advantage of high bandwidth memory.

Most programs fit rather well into the CPU cache hierarchy, so high bandwidth memory is rather a don't care for most CPU users. P4 would be a complete waste of money for a typical business user or Internet surfer.

DDR is coming out at just about the right time, and Intel has suffered a lot for jumping the gun with Rambus. Look what happened to Timna.
