Global Shipments of Car Navigation Systems in 2001 to Rise 30.7 Pct.: Survey
February 19, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Nikkei Market Access said a survey showed that global shipments of car navigation systems rose 42.6 percent from a year ago to 2.7 million units in 2000.

Shipments in 2001 also are expected to post a 30.7 percent year-on-year increase to 3.53 million units.

By region, shipments are rapidly growing outside, especially in Europe, with the ratio of European-bound shipments to the total rising to 36 percent, up 12 points from 1999, which accounted for 980,000 units, an increase of 116 percent from 1999.

In the domestic market, 1.03 million car navigation systems were shipped to automobile makers in 2000, 40.7 percent more than in 1999. Those shipped to the consumer market were up only 1.0 percent. The result was combined shipments of 1.72 million, up 19.4 percent.

The sharp gain in 2000 shipments of car navigation systems for car makers was attributed to the fact that Toyota Motor Corp., which dominates half of the market for car navigation systems for car makers, pulled out from its stagnation in car sales.

Toyota luxury cars, such as Crown and Mark II brands that mostly have car navigation systems, sold well in the second half of 2000. The domestic shipments for Toyota cars with a car navigation system totaled 498,000 in 2000, up 41.1 percent from a year ago, accounting for close to 30 percent of the total.

After Toyota, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. saw its sales of cars equipped with a car navigation system increase 24 percent to 122,000. Third-ranked Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., which could not pull out from sluggish sales, gained 12 percent to 108,000.
