With Joint Stars, which uses Mercury-based computers to take radar imagery of ground targets, the problem is how does the radar receiver differentiate,isolate, and maintain continuity among radar signals being pinged back to aircraft and isolate those that come a tank from those coming from trees and houses, etc.. The plane, itself, is moving at 4-500mph and the targets are either moving or stationary. The apparent way is for near-real time processing based on the direction from which the ping is echoed and the timing when the pings return. This is referred to Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) and the algorithms to do this were being done on super computers a few years ago. With 3g wireless, the problem is analagous I think. How does the receiver at a wireless basestation distinguish and maintain continuity on different transmitted radio signals when the signals are moving or may come from the same azimuth/direction? The same type of processing must be appropriate and is referred to as S(pace)DMA or T(ime)DMA, and is discussed as an adjunct to CDMA.
