i don't see how nt could've avoided this fall by restructuring some months ago. what restructuring is going on there now? yes, they are firing people because they have to now for lack of business. but this drop is from a cause external to nt. every company is being hit. i don't see how nortel, dell, hp, intel, and on and on could have foreseen this and done anything about it. now what is this external cause? my guess is it's human nature to take a breather after a big run up. if anybody knows, please tell me. and i'll tell Alan Greenspan and every other big dome out there.
more important, what can small investors like us do about this to avoid future suffering: buy stocks only for cash. keep half your funds in cash to be used when drops like this hit. when you see the tech sector being hit (earlier than now, when you keep getting bad news, as we did in September 2000), diversify into other sectors currently successful while hanging on to a few obvious tech leaders like nt.
