Is being able to defend yourself uncivilized?

Certainly not. Living in a world where you have to be able to defend yourself--THAT's what's uncivilized.

A small percentage can provide some level of deterrence.

You're probably right that there would be some deterrence. You may be satisfied with "some level of deterrence." I'm not. I want the world I live in to be as safe as it's always been--safe enough that if I exercise reasonable caution and don't enter dark alleys in the middle of the night the chances of my being assaulted are remote. Is that too much to ask?

I don't want to carry a gun, for heaven's sake. I carry a small purse. It contains money, cards, lip balm, tissues, keys, and a nail file. The sum total of all that stuff is smaller than a gun. I definitely don't want to add a gun to the collection. Would you want your mother to have to carry a gun?

Tim, I'm not against carry laws, all other things being equal. But isn't it stupid to have to keep escalating our protection levels like this just because some people are intransigent about protecting their precious rights to build an arsenal?
