Scumbria:The key "programmable register" SDRAM patent is very obvious, and is a minor difference from EDO. Had the DRAM manufacturers known about Rambus plans, it would not be an issue now.

Either the patent examiner knew about programmable registers but didn't consider it obvious or sufficiently similar to constitute prior-art or, the examiner was completely unaware of any prior-art. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe none of the litigating MM's are claiming prior-art to anything other than knowledge shared in JDEC meetings.
