I guess I should have said it is where the money will be.

I realize that voice is where the profit has been. The profit margin will of course be smaller on the datacom side, but the scale and growth will be tremendous especially as the price of the equipment drops. The main reason voice will be free is because there are going to be numerous alternatives over data networks for voice and communication that replaces the need for voice. Voice enjoyed a profitability that was completely undeserved for far too long, as did ISDN and T1 lines and all the other products the telcom companies were selling. Unfortunately I agree with you that the big telcoms are in deep do do. Companies that have annuity stream type income always seem to get themselves up over their eyeballs in debt. I wasn't suggesting that one should be putting an investment into companies that receive their primary income from voice, but those suppliers and carriers that are positioned to benefit from the explosion in datacom. Growth in information networks is not going backwards, it can't. If the old players don't have the money or are too indebted then the new players will take their place.....but we aren't going back to manual inventory over at the store and we aren't going back to calling your broker for a quote, companies aren't going back to setting up call centers when they have Internet service centers set up for ordertaking.

hehehe profitless prosperity.....that was my line. Beats the hell out of profitless poverty.
