Hi Bosco,

John Roth just finished his talk to the Canadian Club at the Royal York in Toronto.

He has still retained a sense of humour opening his speech with,

"I'm more popular than Paul Martin [Canada's Finance Minister], better attended than Alexander Putin, but theses days I feel I could use his body guards."

Couple interesting points.

Lead times which used to be 6 months plus are now in the 4-8 week range. In the past the backlog would have allowed NT to ride out the occasional speed bump in the economy. Now, by the time a slowdown is seen, it has already affected the Q's numbers. i.e. They're not much different than consumer products in this respect.

Roth also talked about data as the growth engine, how NT is now the world leader for fiber optics; the impending growth of wireless data; and ultimately bringing fiber to the door on the local loop side. We know that NT is in a good position to dominate on the first 2. I'd expect to see products soon to handle fiber for the last mile.

And finally, Roth sees the current downturn as an opportunity to continue building market share. While no one is happy with NT's stock price [even the shorts want to see it lower], nothing has changed re NT's prospects. It is still one of the fastest growing large caps in the sector; and it still has enormous opportunities in front of it.

It's probably going to take a year or more before the market reflects that potential unless the street moves at Internet speed too.
