in addition to optics, the one other tech sector that follow closely is supply chain and enterprise software. so, fwiw, here's MHO.

many advanced cos. have have implemented SCM and with B2B systems like Commerce One, I2, Manugistics. Oracle etc. have a good handle on supply and demand from the end customer all the way back to most basic suppliers.

this is one reason this slowdown hit so quickly. they are operating in virtual real time and shut down ordering as quickly as it was felt. there was little inventory buildup.

the good news is that this could turnaround quickly because there is less inventory overhang to work through. if the fed continues to cut aggressivley and the consumer and capital markets come back, they will crank up those supply chains just as quickly as they were shut down. JMHO.
