The selection of Alcatel by CLEAR for the mass deployment of LMDS is a significant development of the growing partnership between the two companies. CLEAR will use the Alcatel solution to offer cost effective competitive services including high-speed Internet, data and voice services to business customers. The contract includes deployment of the Alcatel LMDS solution as well as the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager. Alcatel LMDS is a point-to-multipoint broadband wireless network operating in the high-frequency millimeterwave bands above 20 GHz. The Alcatel 5620 Network Manager enables seamless, end-to-end wireless/wireline management of the network and service delivery. The current deployment builds on CLEAR's fiber optic SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) and multiplex access equipment leased connections also facilitated by Alcatel. "Broadband demand in New Zealand is increasing exponentially," said Guy McKee, general manager of Network and Service Development for CLEAR Communications. "Alcatel LMDS technology allows us to quickly, confidently and cost effectively turn on a full production and featuring rich broadband wireless network to capitalise on flourishing market opportunities." "We have been delighted with the success of the field trials and are pleased to be enabling New Zealand businesses to experience and reap the benefits of high-speed data communications without having to wait for costly infrastructure improvements," added Mark Giles, general manager for Alcatel New Zealand. "With Alcatel LMDS, CLEAR gets the technology, global experience and local support to quickly turn business plan concepts into revenue generating services," said Jean-David Calvet, executive vice-president, Fixed Wireless, Alcatel. "CLEAR Communications exemplifies the type of progressive service provider that benefits from Alcatel's leadership in broadband access." About Alcatel LMDS Supporting Alcatel's leadership in the broadband access market -- including DSL and DLC -- Alcatel is currently the LMDS broadband wireless access market leader with over 6000 base station sectors shipped and more than 100 customers in commercial and trial deployments. Alcatel's success in LMDS broadband wireless access can be attributed to: - Reliable, high-performance products available NOW for mass commercial deployment; - Availability of end-to-end networking solutions including products for Core, Edge, Transmission, and Network & Service management; - Global turnkey deployment experience combined with strong local/in-country presence and deployment support; - Full range of pre- and post-licence support services, including business case analysis, network design & engineering, and customised financing assistance when applicable. The comprehensive Alcatel LMDS solution is a multiservice broadband wireless network comprised of base station and customer premises equipment, and network and service management. A base station, consisting of digital modulation equipment with optional switching capabilities and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. The base station is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. Customer premises equipment includes radio termination (RT) transceivers and network termination (NT) units, which support a full range of services. The network and service management suite supports complete end-to-end management of both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing a full range of VPN capabilities, billing and performance information, statistics and maintenance support.
