Hi David, A comment. The IRS and our legislative branch (bless their hearts) have conveniently arranged for the american people to avoid the trauma associated with large lump sum capital losses by legislating you can only deduct $3k in capital losses in any given year. This should reduce the tax revenue hit you mention. I know this year I will be paying uncle sam big time due to a salary increase - even after accounting for my, ahem, "multi-year" capital loss writeoff.
