He chose to escalate cos he knew he would get a reaction. He is winning allies from the West in the form of the NATO countries that have questioned the recent bombing, and in the form of his Arab brothers, who always unite in words against Israel.

The US/UK are present over Iraq at the request of Kuwait and Saudi, who foot a large bill to cover the "expenses". The contract allows "us" to take whatever action "we" see fit.

Of course, we could decline to provide the assistance that the threatened Arab countries have requested, then perhaps we could see Saddam's armies attacking Kuwait and Israel again.

Having taken the potshot at Bush, and saying he "isn't all that clever" would you tell us what you would have preferred him to have done in response to the onslaught of surface to air attacks on planes patrolling the no fly zones?

Charles..if your reference to Saddam's new adversary is our new President Mr. Bush you are well entitled to your own personnel opinion. However, many members of the original Mod Squad ie: Powell and Cheney plus others are still in the mix and know all to well how to squash a gnat when they see one. Plus lest you forget we still possess the most talented and Technologically prepared group of men and women who are also tremendously capable in the squashing of gnats. If it gets to that point this time I do hope we do not let the Bug get away this time especially when we had him under our right foot last time.
