THERE'S NOTHING LIKE a little energy crisis to make a power plant look a lot prettier. Just ask the folks who build and run them in California these days.
Whatever their feelings about the politics and economics of the state's deregulation of utilities, Californians increasingly realize that a shortage of electricity and high natural-gas prices are the ultimate culprits for their power predicament. And after initially being vilified for gouging poor utilities, independent power producers like San Jose, Calif.-based Calpine are being seen as the companies that'll keep Silicon Valley juggernauts like Intel juiced for years to come. ``We could have never hoped for a PR campaign like we've had in California,'' says Ron Walter, Calpine's senior vice president for business development.
