At the time, Bill Perry's barn wasn't exactly full of stars. I just wonder how Hurley made the decision to go with Dowd when a trainer like Perry was probably available. Then again, I don't know that he didn't try to hook up with him. I know certain guys like Jimmy Croll (Holy Bull's trainer) don't take on just any new clients. Sonny Hine (Skip Away's trainer) wouldn't train for any new people at all toward the end of his career. Perry has Parkinson's, so maybe he wasn't interested. But he did take on Noreen Carpenito's string recently, so it could have been a fit. Just conjecture on my part, of course. But Joe Pierce is around. If you ever get a chance, look at the complete PPs for Friendly Lover. It's a textbook example of how to manage a horse's career. Pierce probably won 10 Grade 3s with him and he even ran a solid 6th in a BC Sprint. Carpenito sent her horses to Jim Ryerson for a while. Coincidently, Jimmy trained Unbridled Song (S&P's sire), winning the BC Juvenile, before he was sent to Zito, which kind of broke Jimmy's spirit. I don't know if you remember how many times Unbridled Song scratched in his 2YO season, but the owner was extremely impatient, while Ryerson was just trying to do what was best for the horse, who had a foot problem. Ryerson trained for Carpenito for a while, then got out of the game. Over the years that I've been following her, the Carpenito has bought nothing but nice horses, so I really like the fit with Perry. Her horses deserve to be in a better barn. Something really good could come out of this match-up. I always felt that Formal Gold should have won the Eclipse over Skip Away, but he ran a really bad race in California, while Skippy went on and beat Cigar in the Classic. Perry's a quiet guy, but he told a friend of mine that he would never trade horses with Hine, and that he really envied Skip Away's durability. Anyway, for my money, Songandaprayer is working at a distinct disadvantage in the Dowd barn. It will also be interesting to see if he has similar physical problems to his sire. Remember DeHere? He had a full brother named DeFrere (both by Deputy Minister out of the very nice Secretariat mare, Sister Dot). The two brothers were both retired with the identical career-ending injury! Rich and interesting game, isn't it?
