Stanford's big new toy tackles data

BY ANNE ROCHELL KONIGSMARK

It's bigger than six household refrigerators and can compute in a matter of hours what used to take weeks.

Stanford University's newest acquisition, a supercomputer called the Origin 3800, will process mountains of biomedical data, including the details of the human genome, and use it to unlock the secrets to human development and human disease. Stanford researchers are so excited about their new toy -- it's the largest computer on campus and one of the largest anywhere devoted solely to biomedical tasks -- they held a news conference Friday to show it off.
