It's actually intestinal flora....the HCL (hydrochloric acid) in the stomach makes it pretty tough for bacteria to live.

I have seen some pretty severe cases of Montezuma's revenge. Some last for a month and I have known people to be scared of Mexico after getting a sever case of it. Even when you are careful you can get it from ice or using a glass that wasn't cleaned correctly. I've always questioned the ice as a cause but that person swore that he didn't touch anything else off his ship ( he was on a cruise). Where I live in Ca. we have alot of friends going and coming in and out of Mexico. It pays to be careful cause you can waste alot of money on a vacation if you get sick. My husband got it several years ago and he was bed-ridden. He didn't go back to Mexico for 15 years.
