To the best of my knowledge, neither has operation-capable air forces in the area. And in ten years they have made no effort to change that. FWIW, we have never got the support of our allies in the Gulf. That doesn't make our efforts right or wrong but it makes me question our operations there more strongly. Maybe the payoff is that the Saudis manipulate OPEC to our benefit. If so, then it seems to be a fair tradeoff. Otherwise, I think we are whistling dixie. From what were they defending themselves? Was there a recent attack on British and American planes? I found no evidence of such. Saddam was in the process of building new and highly sophisticated radar installations which were the targets of the raid. My understanding is that Saddam is rebuilding radar installations that were destroyed in past attacks. Were Britain and the US supposed to wait until one of their planes was shot down before taking out the radar? From Hussein's perspective, how long should he have to wait til he gets control of his country back. Did you know that domestic plane service to two cities in the no fly service have not been able to resume? Apparently Hussein wants to resume service this Sunday. I think Hussein should have been removed from power ten years ago. But that did not happen. So now we have this slow financial bleed....the Australians and Canadians aren't fools.....while we maintain military operations over there, allowing a president to mount a questionable attack three weeks into his new administration. Those radar installations have only one purpose: To shoot down US and British planes. Who else threatens Iraq? Again, you can argue that we shouldn't be there to begin with, and maybe I would agree with you. But I have a hard time buying that we don't have a right to limited, targeted preemptive strikes on installations like this. If you are not sure we belong there, then how can you say that we have the right to attack Iraqi sites without their provocation? Isn't that making two wrongs a right?Frank, in all honesty, how would I know your political positions? You post on this thread infrequently and rarely on politics. Sorry about that. I posted frequently on the Intel thread during the election/campaign and you are a frequent poster there, or at least used to be. Frank, I am not trying to be difficult but I think in 3 mos. I have posted on the Intel thread 5 times and in all honesty the only thread I read "from top to bottom" is this one. That notwithstanding I would have guessed we were more aligned in our political views than some others but politics is a topic that prompts some very strange responses from people. ;~))As for Hussein, I have nothing but contempt for him and wished they had finished him off ten years ago. However, at this point, I think that he is nothing more than a paper tiger......a year of war and ten years of economic embargo have done their job. We can disagree on this too. How many days do you think it would take Hussein to re-occupy Kuwait if all American and British forces left and went home? Remember, this is a guy that fired missiles at Israel, a nuclear power. He doesn't think like the rest of us. I am only guessing on this issue. You may be right...all monies Iraq makes may go into his military. But don't forget a few years ago there were all these accusations that he had advanced biological agents nearly ready to bring into the battle. Why hasn't he deployed these agents? Sometimes I think Hussein is crazy......like a fox. Like I said before, why we did not depose him ten years ago is beyond me. ted
