All that and yet I have seen the most incredible
transformation of Spirit in those two, as a direct result of having to go
through all this. Suffering can sometimes be redemptive, at least it has
been in this case.

I'm sure that's true, and I wish the best for your father and his wife. But is it not OK for someone else to make another choice? I can understand that you might not want to execute their choice for them, and I don't think you should be obliged to, but if that person can find someone willing to help, would you begrudge them their choice to opt out? Your God may determine the time of your death, but what about someone who does not believe as you do? I understand your concerns about abuse, but don't we all get to weigh that risk for ourselves? Personally, I'd rather risk an early exit than languishing in intractable pain.

, I doubt I would pull the trigger on anybody.

Bummer. I'd hope you'd change your mind in my example. The guy is really suffering and only half of him is left. There are no medics anywhere to be seen and he is 4 hours from the nearest field station. He's an enemy who is simply not willing to endure the pain anymore. You couldn't find the compassion to off him, huh?

I find it strange that people wouldn't offer the compassion they'd offer a dying animal. I know you are a hunter and I know you'd never leave an animal in this condition.

I'm sorry to hear about your father's situation with your stepmother. It is a tough call. Amputation is not much of a treatment. Major bone loss like that cases huge effects on your immune system. Then there is the pain. Doctors won't give her our best pain killer, heroine, because they are worried about the DEA. At least in the U.S. Everyone in my family is or has been involved in medicine. None want extreme measures to be used on them. They've seen people live the last months or years on tubes. Not good.

That's sad.
