The present trouble in Zim has, clearly, been caused by Mugabe who is attempting to retain power against a ground-swell of black opposition. There is also a long-standing tribal conflict : the Matabele in the South v the Shonas (Mugabe's people) in the North. Today, only 1% of the population in Zim is white. The white problem in Zim is a red-herring much like it was with the Jews in Nazi Germany where the real enemy was USSR. SA is not anywhere near a Zim-style dictatorship --- yet --- although the anti-white comments of Mbeki and his cronies have certainly given one cause for anxiety. On a daily basis, the real problem is crime. And, not just random crime --- but well organised crime. At present, SA is still capitalist and nationalization of private corporations is never even suggested. In fact, the privatization of various State-run corporations will commence shortly. The problem here is reverse racism --- affirmative action --- call it what you will. Unlike in the US, where similar means of black "empowerment" have occurred, in SA the whites are very much in the minority (< 10% of the population). So, here we have the poor black majority, with many middle-class blacks and a black government, in opposition to a white minority which still dominates the economy. That's why the whites are so scared. It is, in fact, the black middle class who is most vociferous in their condemnation of the whites because it is these who believe they have most to gain if the whites leave. The situation in SA is rather similar to that in Malaysia where the Bumiputera majority attempt to suppress the local Chinese minority who dominate the economy there.
