i own some NEM myself, by default (i used to own BMG which was taken over by NEM). i don't like their big debt load, but they're only lightly hedged and institutions will flock to it once the gold prices rises (no-one is looking at balance sheets anyway these days) as it is one of the (relatively speaking) big caps in the sector.

a trivia aside: CSCO's market cap is still big enough that one could buy 10 times the entire global gold industry with it.
