``I think a lot of it has to do with a shift that may be going on in the fiber optics markets,'' said Pat Chiesalo, optical systems components analyst with Merrill Lynch. ``I think people are thinking that the good news last week from Ciena will have an impact on Alliance, as Ciena is their customer.''

``But if you ask me, today's gains are not sustainable,'' he added. ``At the end of the day, Nortel is more of a market indicator than Ciena.''

The analyst was referring to industry leader Nortel Networks Corp. Late last week, Nortel (Toronto:NT.TO - news) (NYSE:NT - news) shares fell sharply after the company reduced its earnings outlook.



Well, if you ask me, both companies are indicators: NT for Sonet and CIEN for DWDM. You can't dismiss either.
