Are you talking about Itanium?

No, just Merced... *lol* No, actually IA-64 should be quite profitable in 2002... so that would be what we like to call a BAD idea. Some of this touchey feeley internet stuff that Intel's been toying with could go though... I'd also like to see a bigger push to get into communications chips. AMD's been doing their best to turn retail CPU's into commodities, and Intel's recent mis-steps have left the door wide open for them.

My thoughts on what Intel should do:

1) I like the idea of keeping the R&D and capital expenditures on track so that Intel doesn't get caught short on the next upturn... if they spend that money wisely. If they're just going to be throwing it away without a clear path or direction... don't spend it in the first place!

2) Use any excess capacity to accelerate the P4 ramp. You won't get optimized software until the P4 has reasonable market penetration...

3) Focus on a cogent communications roadmap. Their aquisitions don't seem to have a strong direction behind them. This means either 1) Intel is still formulating their strategy, 2) They have no real strategy, or 3) Intel is deliberately trying to camouflage their aims... Take that one as you will...
