In thinking about those we reward in our society - I have always been puzzled at how easy it is to criticize the money a CEO makes and no one seems the least bothered that a Madonna makes more. Even stranger is the idea that people will take political advice from her.

The reason that honorary societies, awards, and prizes are contrived is to redress that imbalance, and reward more emphatically those who are fundamental creators. On the other hand, many inventors have, in fact, grown rich. Anyway, if one is dissatisfied with the position of poets and pure researchers, the solution is to raise money for more grants and prizes. There is a legitimate charitable market, driven by the willingness of people to subsidize what the primary market (in simple goods and services) will not support.......
