I would have to agree with the frontal crush zone. The harness that held him had little give. In effect some of the gear that protected him also contributed to his death.

I'm totally with you Fred. Wouldn't telescoping frames collapse during minor hit's though? ie: rear ending someone might take a car out of the race instead of just cosmetic damage?

This sounds dumb also but what if the belts and seat were attached to something with a bit of forward give on high impact....say the seat and belts gave forward on tension about a foot so as not to have such a sudden stop?
