Tom Kraemer believes that the storage business is ineffective for SUNW and the USIII transition will only exascerbate inventory levels and margins. Also dead dot.coms are flooding the market with used USII based servers at "fire sale" prices, which also doesn't help. It will take two quarters to resolve. They have a long-term "buy rating" on SUNW.

22 1/4: Merrill Lynch downgrades to NT NEUTRAL from NT ACCUMULATE and lowers FY01 (Jun) estimate from $0.68 to $0.65 and FY02 estimate from $0.89 to $0.84. Says economic softness is accelerating non-economic trends that threaten Sun and raise the likelihood that numbers may need to again be reduced. Channel inventories are at a 3 year high. Storage spending remains strong. Sun not only misses this revenue but also runs the risk of losing account control as storage vendors gain influence. Continue to like Sun's server position, but storage matters more. An OEM agreement may be necessary for the next 2 years until Sun can replace the T3.
