RHK Telewatch: Fiber Glut? Hah! Now Customers Woo the Suppliers

Despite heroic efforts to keep up with soaring demand, major manufacturers of optical fiber are basically sold out for the rest of the year. As a result, service providers that haven't found a place on a supplier's list of preferred customers have had to resort to creative measures to obtain the fiber necessary to complete their rollout plans.

Some young and less-established carriers, for instance, are agreeing to combine fiber orders with contracts for optical-networking equipment. Others agree to take specified amounts of NZDSF (nonzero-dispersion-shifted fiber) to become eligible to buy standard SMF (singlemode fiber).
