09:31 GMT WSJ touts Alcatel as a potential bidder for Lucent's Optical Fibre unit
Shares in Alcatel (fr:013000) (us:ala) were 2.5 percent lower after a report in The Wall Street Journal speculated that the French telecoms equipment maker might bid for Lucent's (us:lu) Optical Fibre unit. The unit, which Lucent plans to sell according to press reports, is one of the biggest producers of fibre optic cable with 2000 revenue of roughly $2 billion. The likes of Alcatel and Corning (us:glw) could be interested in bidding for the unit, the Journal reported, which could be worth as much as $8 billion.
