Aside from the technical details, the most salient points to consider re 3G rollouts is 1) finance and 2) customers.

As to finance, I'd encourage any on this thread who don't think that the troubles in telecom are not going away with the Fed's magic wand to read up here:

As to customers, since all early adaptors of 3G services are also early adaptors of AMPS, 2G and soon 2.5G, what the SPs must be having severe agita over is the fact that in order for 3G to succeed, they must kill the cash flow from prior generation of depreciated plant. Not a pretty picture from an accountancy perspective.
