One of the key attributes of the K2 is to provide the switching interface to ATM, Frame Relay, IP, Ethernet etc. Some of these techologies will fall by the wayside as they represented patch solutions at best. Lucent has bet very big on ATM and had acquired Ascend at its pinnicle only to see the market begin to wither under the onslaught of intelligent optical networking. Over time some of these protocols will disappear completely with newer cleaner models to follow. Therefore, I see the K2 as having a limited, but robust lifetime.
