If they choose to be a NIMBY, they should prepare to pay a premium [for anything, for that matter] by having their neighbors to deal with whatever issues associated with being the host! By assistance, I don't mean financial assistance necessarily. Gov Davis did go to Washington. So, implicitly, it was a gesture. I don't know what has transpired though. However, President Bush did make it clear the Fed govt was not going to do anything and its reason was that the deregulation plan was flawed. I guess we all know that. With regard to the SF instance, I think my 1st paragraph applies. But that was then and this is now. It is like those post apocalypse sf movies, able to spill poetry from one's mouth doesn't help one to fend for one's survival <g> Not sure about hydro, since dedamming has been going on in the Pacific NW in the last few yrs. CA does have a few windmill installations, but, my guess is that gas fired plants are still the most cost efficient in the long run. It would be tragic if CA officials spend lotsa mony to make a stop gap solution This debacle is really quite something. It is more than politicians. The EIX officials said they have been borrowing $ for 7 months. They were running their business like how I handled my stk portfolio <VBG>! I think people are doing some of 1, 2 and 3. Well, buying the power plant is unlikely a solution for the cash strapped EIX and PE&G. I am for a free mkt also, but I am also weary of the limited list of suppliers. No one can deny that the idealized scenario of competing suppliers bidding for the lowest contract has never materialized. It is only natural to wonder, is there collusion going on? Remember Archer Daniel? The last I check, collusion is still very much an illegal business tactics. I mean, one could go to jail if one resold the Knicks ticket at a higher price in front of the Madison Sq Garden <VBG> And that is not even collusion! Personally, I think power deregulation anywhere is a fiasco. Like you, I live in the NE, since deregulation, my electric bill has gone up 4x or 5x. And I am not a heavy user <vbg> The problem, ng is much higher. I guess the NE also has a delivery problem <vbg>. Actually, I don't even know where my electricity comes from. Gas, nuclear or [Quebec] Hydro. best, Bosco best, Bosco
