What's kind of amazing is that this guy had gotten so cocky, he was leaving his dead drops within walking distance of his home.

What if someone had stumbled upon one of them by accident? He would have immediately been tied to it by virtue of material's nature, and his proximity.

On the other hand... he could easily excuse himself out to take a walk from home without drawing any suspicion from his family.

Yes... very damaging... But more damaging is the fact that apparently the Russians either were performing a surveillance detection route to see if Haasen was being followed, or were tipped off separately that he had been bagged by his buddies..

And I can tell you that they probably didn't treat him well either. He betrayed all of the people who worked with him on a daily basis trying to catch spies (from all nations).

But drawing inspiration from Kim Philby's experience? What drives someone ideologically to plot and scheme to become a double agent from age 14?

This one goes much farther than the money motive. This guy led his entire life apparently with the goal of finding himself in a position of responsibility where he could ultimately betray his country.

First the CIA Counter-Intel office (Aldrich Ames), and now the FBI CI group....

James Jesus Angleton is rolling in his grave...

No... wait... I'd bet he's spinning like a top...
