RE:Do you not see any correlation between the production of large numbers of unwanted/unhealthy children and the degradation of society (including crime)?

If it's any consolation, I do, but how do you stop people who are not responsible enough to be good parents from producing children? I realize that people can have abortions if they wish, but lots of people who are not capable of raising their children don't use contraception or have abortions. What would you do about this that is not already being done?

The correlation in this country is pretty obvious to any who are willing to look, especially when normalized for other factors. The violence of Haiti, Central Africa and the Middle East have more to do with education, poverty and over population (these are all related to the unequal distribution of resources: material, social and political).

I would argue that most religious and other wars even have their roots in these evils if analyzed in the correct context. When people don't have enough stake in the here and now, they tend to put more stake in the hereafter, hence the religiosity of many impoverished Third World nations. When unsatisfied materialistic needs exist, people go to war or sublimate these needs into religious zealotry.

War and crime are not activities that well-fed and content people participate in. I would further argue that it is difficult to find a well-educated, materialistic society with stable social structures where such antisocial behaviors and desires can find roots except as an aberration. They can, however, frequently come from external agents, which is why I believe it is in our interest to eliminate world poverty via population control.

Or is it the other way around? Lax moral standards, parents who don't have the backbone to instill discipline in their children, a fall off in respect, patriotism, and basic values, and other signs of the degradation of society are leading to large numbers of unwanted/unhealthy children.

I think the production of large numbers of unwanted children, and specifically 1 parent families and teenage pregnancy to be as much a result of degradation of society as a cause if not more so. I do agree that it is to an extent a cause as well, but it is only one factor. Another point is not all of these bad parenting situations are unwanted pregnancies. There are teenagers who actually want to get pregnant. They feel it will tie their boyfriends closer to them, or they feel unloved now and think the baby will love them, or (before welfare reform) that they would then get a welfare check and be able to get there own place. There reasons mostly aren't that logical but then people often don't act logically.
