A.L., re '69-70 and stimulus. Hmmm, seems to me that the over-cautious (ahem) creation of M-1 by the Fed in mid to late 1999, designed to counter a possible Y2K panic inadvertently caused the same sort of bubble as the efforts to deal with Uncle Ho. And the place were all the extra stimulus ended up? The NAZ... BWDIK?

Agreed, Greespan was dissembling during Humphrey-Hawkins so as to not spook the markets further than the are already.

I do not think the U.S. economy will suffer on the same scale as we did in '73-74 nor on the same scale as the Asian economies. That's a whole 'nother discussion in and of itself.
