Agree with both points...but I do not think there was a tri-mode option from Qualcomm until yesterday's announcement.

No company ever likes to have a single vendor for any out-sourced part. Participating in trials with Prariecomm or any other ASIC vendor does not necessarily mean that Qualcomm has been shut out. These kind of announcements should be expected.
