A sleeping giant awakes?
Petroleum Review, February 22

The African continent's potential in the oil and gas sector has been boosted with several major oil discoveries in the region.

Significant discoveries are being pursued in offshore projects in Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Angola.

Other potential areas are those in Chad, Sudan and other landlocked countries.
...
Oil production in the Sudanese fields may soon be increased to 400,000 bbl/day from around 200,000 bbl/day.

Oil production in Nigeria and Angola will also rise over 2000-2005.

More government in the region is now slowly opening up to foreign investors in a bid to sustain long-term development of oil and gas reserves.

Analysts note that the region must be encouraged to pursue a more deregulated oil and gas industry to attract more investments.

This is in view of competition faced by the continent from growth areas in Asia, Latin America, Central Asia, Eastern European countries and the Middle East.
