David, I don't pretend to know what causes depressions. But I do believe that delaying or speeding up a short term rate cut by a few weeks or months is definitely not it. Did you notice that long term interest rates actually went up since the Fed cut? I think they affect the economy more than short term rates do. They go up when the bond vigilantes feel uneasy about US inflation, or the dollar.
