Sun Microsystems and Openwave Form Strategic Relationship to Deliver Mobile Internet SolutionsRelationship Focused on Standards-Based End-to-End Solutions and Programs That Accelerate Development and Deployment of Mobile Internet Services PR NEWSWIRE - February 22, 2001 03:30 CANNES, France, 3GSM World Congress, Feb 22, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV) today announced a broad, strategic relationship to accelerate the delivery of end-to-end mobile Internet services solutions. The relationship includes technology alignment initiatives across product lines from both companies, which together offer wireless service providers with a compelling suite of service creation and deployment capabilities to help increase the average revenue per user, reduce customer turnover, and open new market segments. The two companies also intend to create a wireless developer program to support both Java(TM) and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) developers. This new joint collaborative agreement executed between Sun and Openwave is intended to simplify the development and deployment of rich wireless content and interactive handset applications to help unleash the potential of the mobile Internet. The companies intend to jointly market and support their complementary offerings to the world's leading wireless service providers to further accelerate the growth and adoption of high-value mobile Internet services.

"The mobile Internet is enabling wireless subscribers around the world to stay connected to a broad range of data services, which will be made more compelling and useful through the close collaboration between Sun and Openwave," said Patricia C. Sueltz, executive vice president, Software Systems group at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Developing open, WAP and Java technology-based solutions will help further fulfill the promise of the mobile Internet by delivering new flexible, scalable, feature-rich solutions for building new mobile services."
"The mobile Internet demands a new vision of standards-based development and fully networked operating systems," said Don Listwin, president and CEO, Openwave Systems. "Sun has been a leader since its inception in the concept of networked computing. Teams from Sun and Openwave working closely together will help ensure that wireless service providers can meet growing global demand by enabling them to quickly bring to market innovative and reliable mobile services."
End-to-End Computing and Software Platform for Mobile Networks
The companies plan to jointly test and optimize interoperability among their infrastructure products, which together provide an ideal platform for the deployment of next generation network-hosted mobile services. Specifically, the two companies will test and optimize the interoperability of Sun Enterprise(TM) servers, Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 arrays, Sun Cluster 3.0 software and the Solaris(TM) 8 Operating Environment, with Openwave's infrastructure and application software for next-generation wireless data networks. Additionally, Openwave intends to incorporate the industry standard Java(TM) 2 platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) as an integral part of the Openwave(TM) Email Web edition, which is used to generate user interfaces for a number of applications, including Web-based email. Together, these products create a scalable and reliable environment in which services can be deployed to some of the largest customer subscriber bases in the world. By integrating, testing and optimizing the products, Sun and Openwave expect to increase performance, speed deployment and ease ongoing administration for their communication service provider customers.
Sun and Openwave intend to develop a comprehensive customer support and escalation program. This program is expected deliver an accelerated and cohesive resolution solution for interoperability issues, without having to manage support incidents at both companies.
Java Technology-Enabled Microbrowser
As part of the agreement, Openwave will license Java(TM) 2 platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)). Openwave intends to integrate J2ME with the Openwave(TM) Mobile Browser that will enable the downloading and running of Java technology-based applications for gaming, commerce and other functionality. Additionally, Openwave intends to develop enhancements to the Openwave Provisioning Manager Mobile edition, which provides wireless operators with a solution for delivering Java technology-based applications and services over the air to mobile devices that also integrate Openwave's microbrowser technology.
In delivering an integrated solution with the two market leading wireless data platforms, Openwave will help to further accelerate the ongoing growth of the mobile Internet. In combining Java and WAP technologies to create a rich, standards-based software and content development platform, Openwave will help enable wireless service providers to realize the full potential of the mobile Internet. The combination of Java technology with WAP in a single client environment offers service providers the opportunity to develop additional, new revenue streams.
In addition to enriching Openwave's microbrowser with the ability to seamlessly support Java technology-based applications, Openwave intends to join with other companies as part of the Java Community Process (JCP) to help develop new Java classes aimed at leveraging emerging mobile network technologies. To further support the combined Java and WAP developer communities, Openwave intends to deliver an enhanced Openwave Software Developer Kit (SDK), which integrates Java technology development tools and WAP content development tools to provide a single environment for the development of new services leveraging both technologies. Sun and Openwave plan to make this enhanced SDK available through a new one-stop wireless developer portal program that will provide WAP and Java developer communities with access to tools and resources from both companies.
