what do you think of CIEN? it certainly has held up much better than the other fiberoptics.....at least it's not making daily new lows. are their products that much better?

If there were a technology equivalent of the Nobel Prize, CIEN would win for overcoming the biggest obstacles. Anyone who's followed them for the past couple years knows they've gone nose-to-nose with LU (with help from AT&T), NT and others, and come out on top. The challenges Pat Nettles has faced and overcome would have defeated a lesser man. I believe part of his strength lies in his ability to see himself clearly, without hubris. Good leadership brings good management and good management brings good employees and the cycle continues.

I have to wonder if part of a company's success lies in the nature of its challenges combined with the talents of the management at the time. I think of Intel in its early days. Cisco when it was a scruffy up-start. The same with USRobotics. Perhaps it's a matter of having the right leadership at the right time. If this is true, the current leaders that stand out are Juniper's Scott Kriens, Ciena's Pat Nettles, JDSUniphase's Don Scifers and Josef Straus, and Sycamore's Dan Smith. NT's John Roth should be up there, but for the time being I've put him in the penalty box. (He messed with JDS and I'm not amused. . . :))
