A front page story in the NY Times stated that Buffett, Soros, Gates sr. and other billionaires rejected Bush's plan on eliminating the inheritance tax as unAmerican. They stated that it ruin charities, bust the budget, and destroy the meritocracy that we now enjoy. It would create a privledged class, one determined by accident of birth, rather than achievement.

I know that Gates sr doesn't have to worry about his son. Warren Buffett was so disturbed the the Bush proposal that he wanted an even stronger statement of objection than the other billionaires. However, we know why W. wants money and status to be inherited rather than earned.
